A new partnership for Latitude Blanche

Jul 28, 20232 min readBy Latitude Blanche

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with SEA.AI, a company that develops artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the automatic detection of floating objects. A data collection campaign on icebergs and cetaceans, as well as on weather and ocean conditions, will be carried out aboard Polarfront over several months.

The polar regions are fascinating places where marine mammals must be protected, but they are also hostile ones, where icebergs can be a hazard to navigation.

SEA.AI and Latitude Blanche have joined forces to collect one-of-a-kind data to improve SEA.AI’s floating object detection algorithms. SEA.AI’s artificial intelligence relies on pre-trained deep learning algorithms and models, which need to be fed large quantities of annotated maritime images to learn to identify and classify new floating objects. This new data serves as examples from which the algorithms learn to recognize and understand different objects and visual patterns. A high-quality, diverse database therefore improves the accuracy and performance of SEA.AI’s artificial intelligence.

The collaboration between SEA.AI and Latitude Blanche shows how important innovation and partnership are to improving maritime safety in polar waters.
