The voyage
in a few words
Greenland in summer
On August 22, 2027, Polarfront will once again set course for Greenland on a true expedition, the kind Latitude Blanche loves to design: a small group, total immersion and an itinerary dictated by nature. Once again, the adventure will go far. Very far… You’ll join Polarfront in Spitsbergen before heading west. The ship will skirt the sea ice on an exceptional passage to Greenland. Monumental icebergs, mountains, sea ice and Arctic wildlife will set the scene for this adventure in the vastness of Northeast Greenland National Park.
For 10 days, not a single inhabited place will come into view, except Ittoqqortoormiit, where a port call will give you the chance to glimpse daily life in an Arctic community. In these remote, seldom-visited regions, the word expedition takes on its full meaning. The charts are sometimes not entirely reliable. Polarfront will then have to advance with caution, once our sailors have sounded the depth under the keel from a Zodiac, a few cable lengths from the ship.

The logbook
A suggested program: aboard Polarfront, the weather, the ice and the wildlife also decide the route.
01Longyearbyen
Boarding at 5:00 p.m. and welcome aboard Polarfront.
Get to know the ship and your living spaces over a welcome cocktail.
We set sail at 6:00 p.m.
02Heading for Greenland
You’ll enjoy the comfort of Polarfront during these two days at sea on the way to Greenland.
You’ll sail along the drifting pack ice off northern Greenland, on the lookout for walruses, seals and, of course, the polar bear!
Our naturalist guides will also give talks to prepare you for your arrival in Greenland.
03Île de France
This isolated island off northeast Greenland was once home to the Inuit. The local people have since left it, and abundant wildlife has moved in. It’s not unusual to
come across seals, walruses and polar bears here, or whales swimming offshore.
04Dove Bay
Dove Bay is crowded with icebergs whose glacial hues stand out against the surrounding tundra.
Its fjords harbor rich wildlife, including musk oxen, polar bears and walruses.
You’ll weave between the icebergs by Zodiac before going ashore for a hike across the wild tundra.
05The Pendulum Islands
The Pendulum Islands archipelago is made up of Little Pendulum Island, Sabine Island and Walrus Islet. This desolate archipelago is known above all for the remains (boats, huts…) left behind by the great
explorers.
The Weather War of 1941–1944 also left its scars. At the time, the Allies and Germany were competing for reliable data from the North Atlantic and the Arctic for their military weather services. This data mattered because it shaped military planning and the routing of ships and convoys.
06Kaiser Franz Joseph Fjord
Explored during the Second German North Polar Expedition of 1869–1870, this fjord is named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, who helped fund this ambitious polar venture.
You’ll venture deep into this wild, mineral world, where every bend reveals a new landscape. The ship threads her way between towering rock walls, sculpted by the
ice and streaked with mineral hues, before the fjord opens onto vast, silent plains where majestic musk oxen sometimes roam.
07Ittoqqortoormiit
In Greenlandic, Ittoqqortoormiit means “the settlers with the big houses.”
Located at the mouth of Scoresby Sund, Ittoqqortoormiit is the largest inhabited village in the
area. The roughly 350 residents of this isolated outpost rely on the Arctic’s bounty to provide for their needs, living from traditional hunting and fishing. In fact, it was the rich waters flowing at the mouth of Scoresby Sund that led to the village being founded here in 1925.
08Scoresby Sund
Scoresby Sund is the largest fjord system in the world. It is famous for its gigantic icebergs, the most colossal in the Arctic, many of them grounded on the floor of the fjord, which reaches 400 m deep. Some of these icy giants stand more than 100 m tall and stretch more than a kilometer long.
The blue-black depths of Scoresby Sund are home to the legendary narwhal, while its varied shores are the realm of the mighty polar bear.
09Constable Point
The adventure will end at Constable Point, a tiny airfield lost in the heart of the Arctic: a gravel runway barely a kilometer long, deep in Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world.
After leaving Polarfront, you’ll board a private flight arranged especially for your group, aboard a twin-engine aircraft flown by two pilots, which will take you directly to Iceland.
