A question about your voyage?Write to us
Where is Spitsbergen?

Spitsbergen is the main island of the Svalbard archipelago, located in the Arctic Ocean between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

What is the difference between Spitsbergen and Svalbard?

Svalbard is the name of the whole archipelago, while Spitsbergen refers only to its largest and most populated island.

Can you see polar bears in Spitsbergen?

Yes. Spitsbergen is one of the best places in the world to see polar bears in their natural habitat, especially near the sea ice.

What is the best time to travel to Spitsbergen?

Spring is ideal for seeing the sea ice and snow-covered landscapes. Summer lets you explore the entire archipelago under the midnight sun, while fall brings magnificent light and the first northern lights. Arctic wildlife lives here and can be seen year-round.

Why choose a small-group voyage to Spitsbergen?

A group limited to 12 guests means more flexibility, quicker landings and a more immersive experience in the heart of the Arctic.

What activities are offered during the expedition?

Travelers take part in hikes (on snowshoes in spring), Zodiac excursions, wildlife watching and talks on board. Water activities (such as fishing and our famous polar pedal boats) are also offered to guests.

How much does a Spitsbergen cruise cost?

As of fall 2026, our Spitsbergen cruises range from €9,720 to €15,600 per person, depending on the voyage, the season and the suite, based on double occupancy. The price includes full board on the ship, Zodiac outings, landings and lectures by our naturalist guides; flights to Longyearbyen are not included.

Voyage by voyage: how much does a Spitsbergen cruise cost?

How many days do you need to discover Spitsbergen?

Allow 8 to 11 days. Our voyages last 8 days (Autumn escape), 9 days (Autumn lights) or 10 days (Polar spring, Midnight sun), starting and ending in Longyearbyen; the expedition to Greenland lasts 11 days. A week lets you explore the west coast and its fjords; ten days, to push north and east when the ice allows.

How do you get to Spitsbergen?

Our voyages begin in Longyearbyen, the capital of the archipelago. You fly there from Oslo with SAS or Norwegian: about three hours, sometimes with a stop in Tromsø. The simplest route is to fly to Oslo, then on to Longyearbyen, leaving some margin before boarding, or even a night there.

Flights are not included in the price of the voyage: our team can help you choose them.

Do you need a passport for Svalbard?

Svalbard is not part of the Schengen Area: there are ID checks at the airport, on the way in and on the way out. Please travel with a valid passport, and check Norway’s entry requirements for your nationality, since flights go through Oslo. All the formalities are in our practical information.

What is the weather like in Spitsbergen?

Expect around −5 °C on average in spring (April and May), sometimes below −10 °C; around +5 °C in August; around 0 °C in September and October. The wind makes it feel colder, and the weather changes quickly.

On board, every guest receives an extreme-cold suit for Zodiac outings. Our season-by-season packing lists are in our practical information.

Can you see the northern lights in Spitsbergen?

Yes, in the fall. From late April to late August, the sun never sets and the sky stays too bright. From late September, when the nights turn dark again, the first northern lights of the season can appear: it is one of the highlights of our voyage Autumn lights in Svalbard. For the northern lights in the depths of winter, we sail in northern Norway.

Do you need to be athletic to travel to Spitsbergen?

No, good general fitness is enough. Outings are by Zodiac and hikes are adapted to the group; in spring, you walk on snowshoes. You need to be able to get in and out of a Zodiac and walk on sometimes uneven ground. If in doubt, tell us about your situation before booking.

Will I get seasick during the cruise?

Most of the time, Polarfront sails in the fjords and along the coasts, sheltered from the swell. Open-sea passages can be rougher. If you are prone to seasickness, bring a remedy after checking with your doctor.

Can you go to the North Pole from Spitsbergen?

Not on an expedition ship: the geographic North Pole lies in the middle of the frozen Arctic Ocean, and only a handful of icebreakers go there. Svalbard, between 74° and 81° north, is the last inhabited shore before the Pole; Longyearbyen is about 1,300 km from it. We explain everything in our guide can you go to the North Pole by ship?

What changed with the 2025 regulations?

Since January 1, 2025, ships with more than 200 passengers can no longer enter Svalbard’s protected areas, and landings there are limited to 43 designated sites, with a guide. With 12 guests, Polarfront still explores the national parks and nature reserves, and every landing is made in a small group. All the details are in our article on Svalbard’s regulations.
