Built in Norway and chartered by the Norwegian state for almost all of his life, POLARFRONT is a regular in the Great North.
Carved to face the hardest seas, in all weather and safe, it is an excellent shipping ship.
He distinguished himself for having done for 10 years, readings of the evolution of CO2 in the atmosphere in partnership with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, to the convergence of masses of polar and tropical airs, hence its name Polarfront.
Polarfront occupies a special place in the maritime world as it is the last meteorological vessel to have entered global databases.
Ships of this type are now replaced by simple scientific buoys or meteorological satellites.
Polarfront has kept its soul as a weather ship since a MÉTÉO FRANCE weather station is on board. It automatically emits data that feeds the world’s meteorological databases. Station data is important because it is part of the initialization of numerical weather forecasting models, and is then available for doing climatology.
