Yet this process, essential to building and maintaining ships, is far from a recent invention. Its history goes back to antiquity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An exceptional archaeological discovery in the heart of Beirut offers remarkable proof. During work on a real estate project in the downtown area of the Lebanese capital, archaeologists uncovered an ancient harbor complex of immense value. Preserved in exceptional condition, these remains are the only surviving traces of Beirut\u2019s ancient harbor facilities that can be seen today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The site includes two dry docks with their access ramps, a complex dating back to the 5th century BC at the latest, in the Phoenician period. The discovery shows how much technical skill the builders and sailors of antiquity had mastered, long before the great modern shipyards came along.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Each dock, about four meters wide, was probably designed for narrow-beamed vessels typical of the trading and coastal shipping of the time. Ships could be hauled out of the water on sloping ramps to be inspected, maintained or repaired. Hulls were scraped clean of the shells and seaweed that slowed them down, damaged planks could be replaced, and seams made watertight again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">These facilities were also used to lay ships up for the winter. During the bad season, when the sea became more dangerous, boats were sheltered on dry land, protecting them from storms and extending their lifespan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The discovery confirms Beirut\u2019s strategic importance in the maritime network of the ancient Mediterranean. The Phoenicians, renowned as seafarers, traders and shipbuilders, had particularly sophisticated harbor infrastructure. The dry docks bear witness to their know-how and their ability to organize regular maintenance of their fleet, a key factor in the growth of their trade.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond their archaeological interest, these remains are a reminder that many techniques we think of as modern actually originated more than 2,500 years ago.
