They present their conclusions in a new study.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-kj1rxl-4ccabaee55504ac933da8dc1c5faa48b '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Opening an enormous mouth to engulf thousands of liters of water\u2026 without ever flooding your lungs. At first glance, it seems impossible. And yet baleen whales pull off this feat several hundred times a day when they feed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">How do these ocean giants manage to swallow their food underwater without drowning? For a long time, the mechanism remained a real mystery. A study led by biologists at the University of British Columbia, in Canada, and published in the journal <em>Current Biology<\/em>, now offers a fascinating answer.<\/p>\n<h3>Whales gulp down\u2026 thousands of liters of water<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Baleen whales, such as the humpback whale, the fin whale and the blue whale, feed mainly on krill, small shrimp-like crustaceans, as well as on small fish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">When they spot a school of prey, they use a spectacular technique called <strong>engulfment feeding<\/strong> (<em>lunge feeding<\/em>). They suddenly speed up, open their gigantic mouths and swallow an impressive amount of water and food in one go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Some large whales can take in a volume of water equivalent to a small swimming pool: several tens of thousands of liters in a single mouthful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This naturally raises a question: how does all that water stay out of their airways?<\/p>\n<h3>The discovery of a surprising \u201coral plug\u201d<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The researchers identified a previously unknown anatomical structure: a <strong>buccal plug<\/strong> (<em>oral plug<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Located at the back of the mouth, this fleshy tissue acts as a true safety valve. When the whale opens its mouth to capture its food, the plug seals off access to the pharynx, preventing water from reaching the lungs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">When the whale swallows, the mechanism shifts subtly. The plug moves to close off the nasal cavity, while the laryngeal sac protects the lower airways. A protected passage then opens between the mouth and the esophagus, allowing the food to reach the stomach without water flooding the respiratory system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">In other words, the whale can swallow underwater while keeping its lungs perfectly protected.<\/p>\n<h3>Then the baleen goes to work<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Before it is swallowed, the food has to be separated from the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That is the job of the <strong>baleen<\/strong>, the long plates of keratin that take the place of teeth in the great filter-feeding whales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">After closing its mouth, the whale contracts its tongue and pushes the water out through the baleen. The baleen works like a giant sieve: the water flows out, while the krill and small fish are trapped in its fine fringes before being swallowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This filtering system is remarkably efficient, and it allows the largest animals that have ever lived on Earth to meet their enormous energy needs.<\/p>\n<h3>A discovery unique in the animal kingdom<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">According to the study\u2019s authors, no comparable anatomical structure had ever been observed in any other animal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cWe discovered a structure in fin whales that probably exists in all whales that gulp their food with their mouths wide open,\u201d explains biologist Kelsey Gil, the study\u2019s lead author.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">She compares the mechanism to what happens when we humans swallow: our soft palate closes off the nasal passages while the epiglottis protects the trachea, keeping food out of the lungs. In whales, the principle is similar, but it has evolved to work in an entirely aquatic environment, with gigantic volumes of water.<\/p>\n<h3>Why did this discovery take so long?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">You might think that an animal as iconic as the whale has few secrets left to reveal. Yet its anatomy remains difficult to study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Great whales spend most of their lives far out at sea and sometimes dive several hundred meters deep, and it is obviously impossible to observe their digestive or respiratory systems while they are alive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Scientists therefore have to work with stranded animals or animals that died of natural causes. By carefully studying their tissues and anatomy, they reconstruct how the various organs work, a discipline called <strong>functional morphology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">As Kelsey Gil points out, \u201cit\u2019s impossible to study this mechanism in a living whale. We have to rely on tissue from dead animals to understand the role of each anatomical structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Whales never cease to surprise us<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">This discovery is a reminder of just how extraordinary whales remain. Despite decades of research, they keep revealing astonishing adaptations, shaped by millions of years of evolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The \u201coral plug\u201d is a remarkable example of this natural engineering. Thanks to it, whales can engulf huge quantities of water, filter their food efficiently and breathe safely: a balance essential to the survival of the largest marine mammals on our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Each new discovery brings us a little closer to understanding these ocean giants\u2026 while reminding us that they still keep much of their mystery.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div
