But how much do you really know about this dream destination?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\" style=\"text-align: center;\">We\u2019ve put together a list of 10 things you may not know about Norway\u2019s best-known islands.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><b>     1.  The islands were named after a lynx<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">\u2026After a lynx\u2019s foot, to be precise. The island of Vestv\u00e5g\u00f8y, the heart of the archipelago, was originally called L\u00f3f\u00f3t because its shape looked like a lynx\u2019s foot (\u201cl\u00f3\u201d means \u201clynx\u201d and \u201cf\u00f3t\u201d comes from the word for \u201cfoot\u201d). The name later spread to the whole region, which is why the islands are now called Lofoten.<\/p>\n<p><b>    2.  The Lofoten Islands enjoy a microclimate<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">The Lofoten Islands lie inside the Arctic Circle, so you would expect the climate to be bitterly cold. And while it is certainly not warm, the climate in Lofoten is much milder than it ought to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">The Lofoten Islands hold the record for the highest temperatures ever measured at such a high latitude. This is thanks to the Gulf Stream, a current that brings warmer water and keeps the sea around the archipelago from freezing over completely in winter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>    3.  You can surf in Lofoten<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">Remember that warmer climate we mentioned earlier? It is also why the Lofoten Islands are home to some of the best beaches in Norway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">Unstad beach in particular draws surfers all year round with its big waves and strong winds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>    4.  It\u2019s all about cod<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">The warmer climate isn\u2019t just good for surfing: it is also ideal for cod fishing, not least because cod migrate here in winter for the warmer water. This tradition goes back a thousand years and allowed Norwegians to build communities and villages, slowly creating a stable economy around fishing and the cod trade. It continues to this day, as dried cod from Lofoten is exported all over Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>     5.  You may see fish hanging over your head<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">When you visit the Lofoten Islands, you will often find fish hanging above your head. This is the famous stockfish, in other words cod, dried by the wind on triangular wooden racks near the waterfront.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">This way of drying fish is very old. The traditional racks are tall enough for you to walk underneath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>    6.  In Lofoten, you\u2019ll find real Vikings<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">As we mentioned earlier, the Lofoten Islands have been inhabited for more than a thousand years\u2026 by Vikings! Lofoten has very close ties to the Viking Age, with major archaeological finds in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">In the small village of Borg, near B\u00f8stad, for example, archaeologists discovered the largest Viking longhouse ever found, which has since been reconstructed as the Lofotr Viking Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>     7.  The Lofoten Islands, movie stars <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">No, you\u2019re not dreaming! Many of the landscapes in Disney\u2019s hit animated film Frozen were inspired by the little fishing villages with their colorful houses and the jagged peaks of the Lofoten Islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">But Disney isn\u2019t the only one to have fallen for Lofoten. Oscar winner Matt Damon also shot a few key scenes of his film Downsizing in the Lofoten Islands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>    8.  Lofoten is home to a coral reef <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">Few people know it, but the Lofoten Islands are home to the largest deep-water coral reef in the world: the R\u00f8st Reef, west of the island of R\u00f8st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>     9.  Lofoten, a sustainable destination<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">Lofoten is working to become a certified sustainable destination. This means steps are being taken to preserve the breathtaking beauty of the place and its culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">With the R\u00f8st Reef we mentioned earlier in mind, protecting the region\u2019s nature and biodiversity matters all the more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\"><b>     10.  You can see the northern lights and the midnight sun<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">The Lofoten Islands lie beneath a ring of light that circles the Earth\u2019s geomagnetic poles, known as the \u201cauroral oval.\u201d This ring offers the best possible chance of spotting the elusive northern lights during the polar night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_text-build-content\">In summer, you can
